THANKFUL FOR YOUR EMPLOYEES? HERE'S HOW TO SHOW IT
Employees are the lifeblood of any business. We advise our clients to hire A-players and compensate them as such, but it’s also nice to offer “extras” to show your appreciation for everything they do.
The extras don’t always cost a lot, but the thought behind them goes a long way toward building employee morale, loyalty, and a healthy work-life balance.
Here are some of the ways we show appreciation to our employees:
YOU SAY IT’S YOUR BIRTHDAY?
QUARTERLY TEAM EVENTS
We make it a priority to gather as a team once a quarter to strategize, talk about big picture goals, and make plans for the next quarter. Taking a few hours away from the day-to-day routine is a great way to recharge.
FLEX TIME
We understand life happens and certain things need to occur during the workday. Flex time of up to two hours gives our employees the ability to take care of those personal situations, whether it’s a doctor’s appointment or special event at their child’s school.
THE EXTRAS
Our team works hard—especially during our busy season when working extra hours is necessary. We recognize the sacrifice our employees make during these times, and ease the burden by reimbursing them for expenses that may occur at home as a result…such as dog walking services, longer child care hours, dry cleaning or dinner.
TEAM MEMBER HAPPY HOURS
No one goes hungry (or thirsty) at Gerber! Our shelves are stocked with snacks, and the fridge is full of beverages. We schedule regular team happy hours, especially on Friday afternoons and during the summer when we can be outside and take a break from the grind.
ANNUAL OFFSITE RETREAT
Once a year we take a few days away to focus on the business goals we want to accomplish for the year. It’s a working get-away, but it’s always a lot of fun and a great way to get to know each other better. We’ve been to destinations like Hocking Hills, New York, and Philadelphia. You don’t need to take a big trip if it’s not in your budget. Just changing environments is all it takes.
ANNIVERSARY LUNCH
On each team member’s employment anniversary, Randy, our founder and principal, takes them out to lunch.
LUNCH JUST BECAUSE
Impromptu lunches shake up the daily routine, and are another way to show our employees we appreciate them. (Yes, many of these perks are centered around food. We own it. We love food.)
AN OLD FASHIONED THANK YOU
Having a culture of gratitude goes a long way. Just saying “thank you for your work,” “thank you for coming in early,” or “thank you for helping that client and going the extra mile” is often the most powerful way to show your appreciation. Acknowledging efforts, big or small, and remembering to say thank you sincerely and often is engrained in Gerber’s culture.
